NZIER’s latest Insight explores potential future developments in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and implications for New Zealand.

It is important to prepare for a range of possible futures while working to address the costs of disruption in the present. We argue that it is time to start preparing a range of policies that could be used to encourage the adoption of AI and manage its impacts. We also present a starter for ten, specific policies that could be considered.

“The government should take a proactive approach,” said Adrian Katz, Senior Economist at NZIER. “This means not only encouraging the appropriate use of generative AI but also helping workers adapt to labour market changes.”

This paper is the second in a two-part series titled “How could generative AI transform our economy?” The previous paper discussed economic theories and emerging evidence.
