Shamubeel is a passionate economist interested in the workings of the New Zealand economy. Shamubeel heads up Membership Services, where he looks after NZIER’s economic forecasts and analysis of our Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion.

Shamubeel holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Management with Honours in Economics from Lincoln University. He has worked as a macro economist in the private sector since 2001, both in New Zealand and Australia. His focus and interest is in analytical frameworks to aid economic forecasting, commentary and incisive research into topical areas of economics.

Shamubeel has worked closely with the Retirement Commission on a number of projects and also provides economic advice on a formal and informal basis. Shamubeel has provided frameworks and advice to better define the Retirement Commission's goals and objectives. Shamubeel also supplies and relates economic data according to the client's needs.

This work has helped the client make informed decisions in keeping with the macroeconomic environment.

Shamubeel and a colleague developed a model to analyse the aged residential care facility investment and workforce requirements out to 2026. This analysis was part of the Grant Thornton led review for the District Health Boards and the NZ Aged Care Association. The analysis indicated the magnitude of change, the likely cost and price path in the sector, and the subsequent impact on aged care service demand.

The scenarios informed the clients’ deliberations about the policy implications.

Shamubeel has analysed and prepared an assessment of an overseas economy and its equity market. The analysis was from a dispassionate and professional basis. The results and reports helped shape the client’s investment strategy and publications.

This work provided the client with a framework and independent assessment of the subject country.
