Dr Bowman is an Emeritus Professor of Finance at the University of Auckland. He was first appointed Professor of Finance in the Department of Accounting and Finance in 1987 and was the Bank of New Zealand Professor of Finance until 2007.

Before coming to New Zealand, he held positions in academia, industry and consulting in the USA. He has been awarded a BA in economics from Pomona College, an MS in accounting from San Diego State University and a PhD in accounting from Stanford University.

The greater part of his consulting experience is in a regulatory environment and on behalf of companies that are subject to regulation. He has also advised regulators and prepared submissions to regulators on policy issues.
